Finding the Right Support

Glenda found support through TURSA. TURSA is a leading employment provider assisting participants find work.

Dan who works at TURSA as an Employment Adviser, made sure to take the time to know and understand Glenda’s needs.  Finding her a role in Indigenous Employment where she knew the company, how they worked and felt comfortable, that was the key.

He knew that it would take time for her to feel comfortable. So, Dan assisted Glenda without pushing her, using small, gentle steps so she never felt pressured about returning to work.

Glenda shares her story

Securing Employment after 30 years

Glenda a proud indigenous woman had raised 7 children over 30 years. Unsure about entering the workforce she was inspired by her 14-year-old daughter starting work at McDonalds.

Community Partnerships

TURSA partners with other community organisations to provide a broader support network. This enabled Glenda to finish a first aid and safe food handling course.

Dan developed a connection with Glenda and understood her needs. This made Glenda feel acknowledged and boosted her trust. As a result, Glenda began engaging with other people and making new friends.

Over time, Glenda’s confidence grew as she realised that Dan was there to help her.

Landing the Job

Having shared the journey with her, Dan was overjoyed when they got the news, he knew how hard Glenda had worked. Glenda now enjoys working in indigenous childcare, alongside family and friends. She now feels far more connected to the community.

Glenda’s story is just one of many stories like hers across our organisation.

TURSA recognises that employment is just one aspect of a person’s life. Many participants need support, such as clothing, training, and transport assistance, to achieve long-term stability and success.

TURSA connects with community organisations to provide additional services when needed. This ensures participants have access to the support needed.

Dedicated Job Support

Dan played a pivotal role in helping Glenda overcome her barriers and rebuild her confidence.

He showed empathy and patience, knowing Glenda was hesitant to engage with the world.

By taking the time necessary, building a trusted connection and keeping the process manageable they were able to develop an achievable outcome.

Small Steps

Rather than pushing her into anything, Dan took small positive steps with Glenda, allowing her to try things out and see what worked for her. Through small steps, Glenda’s confidence grew, and she became more comfortable communicating with others and engaging with people.

By not pressuring Glenda Dan allowed her to take those first steps at her own pace. He encouraged her to take courses and helped her prepare for job interviews when she was ready. Ensuring she had the skills and knowledge needed to succeed.

Empathy and Understanding

Dan’s approach to helping Glenda was grounded in empathy, patience, and a deep understanding of her barriers. By taking small positive steps, he built her confidence, encouraged her to try new things, and ultimately helped her find a path towards a job. TURSA is committed to supporting local community employment.

The DidjGuy -
Roland Brown's Story of Inspiration

Roland Brown

Roland Brown, known by his stage name DidjGuy and Dark Rose, has come a long way since his battle with alcoholism. Ashleigh Huckel, a TURSA representative, helped Roland get back on his feet and onto sobriety and employment. In a recent interview, Ashleigh shared insights about Roland’s journey and the positive changes she has witnessed.

According to Ashleigh, Roland is a 24-year-old proud indigenous male from Darwin passionate about music. He plays a didgeridoo trombone and regularly performs around local centres. Despite his talent, Roland struggled with his identity, leading to heavy drinking. However, after seeking help from Ashleigh, he was put in touch with The Buttery, a rehabilitation centre in Lismore.

Roland entered the intensive six-week program with group sessions four days a week. Since then, his life has turned around and he has made significant progress. He has moved into his own house, built a better relationship with his children, and landed a job as a night filler at the new Coles in Lismore.

Asking for Help is the First Step for Change

When asked about the changes she has seen in Roland, Ashleigh revealed that he has completely turned around. His emotions have shifted to the positive side, and he has improved his physical appearance and hygiene. She credits Roland’s progress to the support and hope he received, which gave him goals to aim for.

Never feel ashamed

Ashleigh advises anyone in a similar situation to Roland to never feel ashamed or discouraged about asking for help. She emphasizes that asking for help is the first and hardest step, but it doesn’t make anyone less of a person for doing so.

Roland Brown’s story is a powerful example of how anyone can overcome their struggles and succeed with proper support and guidance. His passion for music, determination, and resilience should serve as an inspiration to us all.

The DidjGuy Talks Setting Goals

Celebrate the inspiring journey of Roland Brown, also known as Dark Rose. Today, Roland is a changed man, but before TURSA, he struggled with alcoholism and chronic weed smoking. He refused to accept his situation and had lost sight of his musical goals. Roland lived on and off the streets for years, busking and performing with other artists in the same boat. But everything changed when he had two kids and realized he was turning 25. He had a wake-up call and decided to get back on track and pursue his goals.
When Roland first came to TURSA, he admits he wasn’t fully present, just ticking boxes to get paid. But something shifted, and he realized there were opportunities and help if he could put in the energy. In addition, there was support willing to meet him halfway. Roland said several times how he is grateful to Ashley for signing him up for The Buttery CORE program, which helped him achieve goals he never thought were possible. As a result, he has been sober for nearly 50 days now and feels clear-minded and driven.
Roland’s passion for music and supporting the youth is what drives him. He dreams of working amongst the community and using his music to inspire and uplift others. He has been hired by Coles and is excited to start working soon.
Roland’s journey is a reminder that there is always time to make a change and pursue your dreams. It takes courage and determination, but anything is possible with the proper support and mindset. We celebrate Roland’s journey and look forward to seeing where his future takes him.

Kathy Port Macquarie with advice to step into TURSA, they'll find you a job, have the right programs to match individual needs

Tursa Employment & Training in partnership with Many Rivers Regional Housing in Port Macquarie has recently helped Kathy secure employment as a finance officer. It’s a role she never expected to have, but she’s enjoying the challenge and feeling confident in her abilities. However, it wasn’t an easy journey for Kathy to get to this point. She had been unemployed since 2011, taking time off work to care for her son and then transitioning into community work for 10 years. When her husband’s health issues required her to return to the workforce, Kathy struggled to find employment in a culturally supportive environment.

Despite facing challenges, Kathy persevered and found support through Leslie Williams  who helped continue the work Kathy had started and, with TURSA. This was a major turning point for her, as she was able to work with a group that understood her cultural background and found an organisation as well that supported her efforts to revive the language and cultural practices of the Aboriginal community in the area.

Kathy credits TURSA with being instrumental in her success, providing the cultural support she needed and helping her secure a position that aligns with her skills and interests. She encourages others facing similar challenges to seek out resources and support to help them achieve their goals.

Overall, Kathy’s journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of having a supportive community. Her story serves as an inspiration to anyone struggling to find employment and highlights the critical role that organizations like TURSA play in helping individuals overcome barriers and achieve their dreams.

Meet Kathy, a finance officer at Many Rivers Regional Housing

Kathy explains how she has taken on an unexpected challenge and enjoys it. “I never thought I would be doing finance work, but here I am, and I’m enjoying it,” she tells me with a bright smile.

But Kathy’s journey to this point was a full one. “Although I was unemployed for a long time, since 2011, I was busy,” she reveals. After having her son, Kathy stepped into community work for ten years, helping revive the Aboriginal community’s language and cultural practices in the area. However, when her husband’s health worsened, she had to switch roles and get back into the workforce quickly.

Finding the right support was key

Unfortunately, her previous job agency didn’t deliver the cultural support Kathy needed, which made the transition challenging. “It was saddening,” she admits. But Kathy didn’t give up. She reached out for help and found Leslie Williams, who assisted with the community work. Kathy then connected with TURSA. Kathy said she “Found a supportive agency in TURSA“. Helping her put her volunteer hours towards her employment commitments and even assisting her secure work within the Aboriginal community again.

Focusing on two key areas TURSA was able to assist with individualised support for Kathy to build her confidence needed and provided cultural alignment to her job goals.

Raw Emotion Evident as Tammy Shares Her Story

Tammy can you tell me a little bit about what initially got you to want to come to TURSA for assistance and what the thought of having a job would do to change your Life?

“OK, so after almost 25 years of marriage, being a housewife and mother, my situation had changed. I knew financially I had no choice but to enter the workforce, something I’ve never done before.”

Tammy can you just talk me through a little bit about what TURSA has done to support you while you’re looking for work?

“So, appointment one was the scariest thing for me. I was a blubbering mess. I was so nervous. I knew I wasn’t emotionally ready to be in the workforce. However, I was in that position where it had to happen. Lisa kept reassuring me that I was in a happy, safe place and could take my time. We’ve worked through all the steps to get me ready. It was to the point where I left the appointment going, you know what, I think I can do this for a change. And just after every appointment and lots of encouragement, I just got more and more comfortable. And then, all of a sudden, Lisa rang me up and said, “Oh, this business is looking for employees. How about it? Are we ready?” And I said, “You know what, we’re going to try.” So, I handed in my resume within half an hour and anxiously awaited the reply. To my absolute joy, it did come, and I sat a great interview with them.

But once again, the anxiety, I’m older, have health concerns, and don’t have a license, which was part of the troubling things about my situation. And through it all, Lisa kept saying, “You know what, don’t give up. In our hearts, it’s bound to happen. So just don’t worry.” And it did, and they offered me the position.

So you landed the job, how is it, what has been your favourite experience so far?

So yes, I am working, and the people I work with are great. I enjoy the customer interaction, and my favourite part of the job was over Christmas, just seeing all the happy people going about shopping and preparing for the holidays.”

It makes me a bit emotional too!

“Tammy’s journey has been truly inspiring. From the moment she walked into my office, scared and uncertain, to where she is now, overcoming obstacles and finding work, I am incredibly proud of her. It’s moments like these that make my job so fulfilling, knowing that the support I provided has helped Tammy and her family. Her dedication and perseverance have been exceptional, and I am honored to have been a part of her progress.”

Andrew talks about having to change job direction to find work, photo of him looking at the camera
“Breaking into a New Job Market: Andrew’s Story of Challenges and Success”

Thanks for chatting with me Andrew, can you tell me a little about how you came to TURSA in Coffs Harbour?

I relocated from Molong near Orange to Coffs Harbour.  It was some time ago when I joined TURSA. Finding work in Coffs Harbour was challenging for me. Initially I wanted to find a sales job while I got on my feet, but my background is in computers and IT. I used to run my own computer business and had received training in the field, but technology was advancing so quickly that I was struggling to keep up. Despite being surrounded by computer shops, most of them were family-owned businesses, making it difficult for me to secure employment.  I found that getting a job in IT in the area required the right connections.  It was nothing but IT for me from school onwards so going there and seeing all the computer shops and then realising I needed to be a family member to get in was disheartening.   The other challenge I found was that technology was moving so fast and not being in a job I could not maintain my industry standards.  I did a few short jobs but really found working in IT that it was better working for myself.  I could manage myself a lot better and did not have a boss telling me to do things that a customer would not like or appreciate. So, in that respect I am glad I am currently out”

Can you tell me a little about what you have done in conjunction with TURSA to secure employment here in Coffs Harbour?

TURSA assisted me with getting my RSA certificate to open further options for work.  I did spend some time serving drinks but found it wasn’t really my thing.

Tursa assisted me to purchase new clothes and helped with petrol for the first week after I transitioned into a cleaning role which was a significant help. My current role I find I have been loving it and found a job that I enjoy.

What are your plans for the future.  Now that you are working has that got you thinking about what doors may open?

I think eventually I’d like to start my business again.  There are some ongoing issues with my website that will be resolved next year.  I want to get that all started again but this time I want to approach it differently and be more involved. I would be keen to see if there is any more support, I can get through TURSA so that I can build it up. Because I was a one-person business, I really want to get more people in to help me and to build up more business.

But for now, I am working for a business that is appreciative, great communicators and happy to praise a job well done which makes it a great place to work.

Andrew – Participant Coffs Harbour

“Supporting a Job Search: Terrie’s Strategies for Helping Andrew Find Work”

Hi Terrie.  Can you tell me a little about Andrew and what has been achieved while he has been getting assistance from you at TURSA?

“Andrew had previously worked with us when we were Job Network and had completed the NEIS program he became self-employed, but his business took a hit when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. He returned to us for support”.

So when Andrew returned and you realised his business was not going to sustain him, how did you approach the new challenge he was facing?

“He has a background in computer work but this time around he decided not to look for work in IT as it had proven to be too difficult. We were determined to help him find a job that would fit his current needs.  The first opportunity was a job at Club 300, but he needed an RSA which we organised. But unfortunately, that job was filled before he was able to secure it.  We then found him a role in office cleaning, however that job was not really a good match, so we got him another job with a different cleaning company which is what he is currently doing now.”

That is a really big change from his skillset, how is he finding doing a totally different role especially one so physical?

“Andrew is in his early 40s and realized that he needs to continually update his skills if he wants to stay relevant in his work in IT due to the rapid changes in technology.  Consideration also had to be considered with the type of work he could sustain as he is diabetic, which limits the amount of work he can take on since he may get tired easily. However, he is currently enjoying the job he has, which is great!”

 -Terrie a local Employment Adviser.

"Success is not always a predetermined destination, but rather a journey of unexpected twists and turns that may lead us to places we never thought we'd go."

Photo of Terrie - Coffs Harbour Tursa Office

In conclusion, Andrew’s journey to Coffs Harbour was not an easy one. Despite his expertise in his profession, he struggled to secure employment in his field and eventually technology go ahead of him. However, he did not give up and instead found alternative employment with the assistance of Terrie and TURSA that allowed him to refocus and plan.

Although it was not what he had initially envisioned for himself, Andrew’s new job has brought him a sense of purpose and a renewed passion for his profession.

Andrew’s resilience and determination have paid off, and he is now in a better position to relaunch his business when the time is right. He has learned the importance of adaptability and the value of keeping an open mind when faced with challenges.
