December 3 is International Day of People with Disability. This year’s theme is “Not all Disabilities are Visible”, which aims to break down barriers that people with invisible disabilities face every day. Below are three suggestions that you can do to recognise and celebrate.
1. Educate yourself and others about invisible disabilities
Invisible disabilities are often misunderstood or overlooked, so one of the best things you can do is educate yourself and others about them. This could involve reading articles or books, watching films or documentaries, or even talking to someone you know who has an invisible disability. The more we understand about invisible disabilities, the easier it will be to create inclusive environments for everyone. Here is a short blog that discusses Invisible Disabilities CLICK HERE
2. Talk about the challenges you face
Another way to raise awareness is to talk about the challenges you face on a daily basis. This could be in conversation with friends or family, or even in a more public setting like a blog post or social media status. By sharing your experiences, you’ll help others understand what it’s like to live with an invisible disability.
3. Offer support to others
If you know someone who is struggling with an invisible disability, offer them your support. This could be in the form of a kind word, a listening ear, or even some practical help. Just knowing that someone cares can make a big difference to someone who is struggling.
International Day of People with Disability is a day to celebrate the achievements of people with disability and to break down the barriers they face every day. Take some time today to educate yourself and others about invisible disabilities, talk about the challenges you face, and offer support to others. Together, we can create a more inclusive world for everyone.
